Having coverage of these items would be such a relief! Trying to keep up with the strict diet and routine around administering medicine multiple times a day becomes very stressful. On top of that knowing my child can only eat things like fruit, vegetables, and low protein foods become very overwhelming financially. We do not have the leisure of giving our children chicken nuggets and hot dogs, we have to measure our formula and food down to the gram and count the specific protein in each item. Fruits, vegetables, and metabolic formula can be very expensive and for families who cannot afford this, that can mean their child can become severely developmentally delayed and even result in death. Our current insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield and they do not cover my daughter’s metabolic formula which is called Anamix Junior or the low protein foods that she has to eat to stay on her prescribed strict diet.

The Medical Nutrition Equity Act will provide key support for those Americans who rely on medical foods to survive and thrive.
