We purchase medical insurance from employer. Employer is self insured so not subject to the Pennsylvania Medical Foods Act. MSUD powder covered partially. Employer is self insured so not subject to the Pennsylvania Medical Foods Act. Other doctor prescribed amino acids not covered.
Previous insurance management firm required year proof that our son was still afflicted with MSUD and paperwork is laborious and slow. Current management firm is going to require re-certification every 6 months. Delays in payments are frequent. We are fortunate to work with an understanding local medical supply company. MSUD powder is expensive – $2,775.00 for about 2 1/2 months of powder and is the mainstay of the diet for an MSUD person. Insurance always denies payment for other protein supplements such as valine and isoleucine which are recommended by the doctor. Special low protein pastas and other protein free foods are expensive and the insurance does not pay. Most doctor visits and check up tests (usually blood work) are not covered by insurance either.
