I have phenylketonuria and am required to eat low protein foods and drink a formula supplement daily FOR LIFE. Without these items I would have severe mental affects from high Blood protein levels or malnutrition. Due to the pandemic, I was able to get a discount on formula but when this ends I will not be able to afford the formula that I need because my insurance will not cover it. Having no formula would cause me to go off-diet to get adequate dietary protein and vitamins. Being off-diet can cause severe neurological problems, anxiety, depression, rashes, seizures or even personality changes. During pregnancy, someone having high blood protein levels can cause the fetus to have Low birth-weight, microcephaly, heart defects, intellectual disabilities, or miscarriage.
It is imperative that someone like me can get these important treatments, but without your help it is unaffordable. In Missouri, as well as with my health insurance, my medical foods and needed formula supplement are not covered at all. Please support the medical nutrition equity act!
